Men's basketball coach, Scot Cauchon, named Coach of the Year

Camosun Chargers’ Scot Cuachon receives coach of year award

The Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) announced the basketball awards for the 2021-2022 season, and Camosun Chargers men’s head coach, Scot Cuachon, was named PACWEST Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

Cuachon has been instrumental in the success of this group this season. His dedication, preparation, and commitment define his unparalleled approach to coaching. Through a season that saw an unprecedented amount of injuries to key players, Scot was able to build an environment conducive to success and togetherness, allowing the team to believe in themselves and each other.

“We are extremely proud of Scot and his contributions to the men’s basketball program,” said Heather Cummings, Vice-President, Student Experience. “This honour is well deserved and a fitting tribute that will cap off his career as a Chargers head coach.”

Following Cuachon’s leadership, the team saw a core of returnees step into their own leadership roles with incredible success. Accompanied by a young group of players that found their stride amid a tumultuous season, the team found ways to continue their success, resulting in a 13-5 record, second seed in the league, a top 10 national ranking moving into the playoffs, and impressive 7-1 win streak down the home stretch.

“Scot’s growth as a coach has been on display all season helping the team win key games,” added Chargers Assistant Coach, Dylan Marsden. “I am incredibly proud and happy for him on being named PACWEST Coach of the Year.”

During Scot’s tenure as head coach of the Chargers men’s basketball team, he has led the team to the PACWEST championships every year, with back to back bronze medals in 2019 and 2020, and best silver medal in 2016.

The 2022 PACWEST basketball championship is set to begin on March 3, 2022 at the Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford. The six-team tournament gives the top two seeds a bye into the semi-finals, which are scheduled for Friday. The medal matches will take place on March 5, 2022, with both first and second place winners punching their tickets to nationals.

The Chargers men’s basketball team (13-5) receives a quarterfinal bye and will wait to see who they face off against in the semi-final, which will either be third ranked Capilano Blues (10-6) or sixth seed Okanagan Coyotes (5-11).

Their drive for the PACWEST championship goes on Friday at 3pm and can be live streamed on the .
